Dress Code for Interviews

Deciding what to wear to an interview can add unnecessary stress to the preparation process. Generally, it would be a good idea to invest in a good pair of pants (black is most versatile) and a good shirt. This basic outfit can be dressed up should a more formal attire be required.

  • Dress one or two levels higher than the job that you’re applying for. For instance, if you wear jeans and a T-shirt under your lab coat, make sure that you have an open collar shirt, or a work appropriate top for the ladies, and pants or a skirt. A jacket is a good idea for any management or sales vacancy in a corporate environment.
  • All clothes should be clean and neat.
  • If the environment is corporate or conservative, remove any excessive piercings and ensure that your hair is out of your face.
  • If you are still unsure about what to wear, ask for more information about the company’s dress code when you set up the interview.

When you feel comfortable, it will have an impact on your performance during the interview. Don’t over dress but also don’t look too casual.
